  • 2/21/2009 12:08 PM: Cheryl Kraus retires from Arsenal Board of Directors
The Aurora Arsenal Soccer board would like to express an extreme thank you to Cheryl Kraus, who has been on the board for over 21 years! Cheryl has been the club's treasure for most of that time. Many of our young referees know her from the Saturday mornings in which they peddled over to her house after refereeing a few house games to collect their payment. Behind the scenes, Cheryl collected well over 20 000 pieces of mail received to our post office box and directed them to the appropriate board member. She very professionally kept track of club funds and expenses which is a big reason why the membership value to our club is so high. Our club has run very smoothly with such a dedicated volunteer operating a very important postion on the board. Cheryl is now retiring from the board and will enjoy watching her grandsons play Arsenal soccer. Thank you Cheryl for expert dedication to our club!

  • 02/21/2009 9:00 AM: East Aurora High School Coach, Kevin Beale Letter

Below is a letter from Kevin Beale, East Aurora High School Soccer Coach, to the Aurora Arsenal Soccer Club, recognizing and thanking our club for our the development of our club players.

Dear Arsenal Board and Friends of Soccer,

This letter is well over due. As the coach of the East Aurora Boys Varsity Soccer team, I consider myself to be very lucky to be a part of a great program. The Arsenal Soccer Club has provided me with 12 great years of soccer at the High School by successfully training upcoming players. This past year our team, our boys, made a first ever trip to the NY State HS State Final 4 at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta. Since the State Finals began in 1979, East Aurora is only the 5th school in WNY to even advance to the Final game. It starts with the community, at the grass roots level. It starts with you, the Arsenal Soccer Club and all the time and efforts that so many have given to the club. I have been lucky to coach so many great players and even better young men over the years, I can not say, nor is it fair to say, that this was the greatest team yet, but it can be safely said that it was the greatest achievement an East Aurora team has accomplished. It can be considered a culmination of all the efforts of the Arsenal Soccer Club. You should be proud, we would not have made the trip to Oneonta without you.

Whether our team is 10-7 or Sectional Champions making it to a State Final, we have enjoyed the sport of soccer and played and treated the game with respect. You should be very proud of the players/people you have developed. Young Arsenals have grown up to represent their High School and some players have continued their game at the College Level.

Coaches, keep up the great work. Continue to stress skills- dribbling, receiving, attacking, striking balls, defending, decision makers, sportsmanship, and let them have fun. Let them enjoy the game, give them the game. Better players make better plays, not systems. Heck I don’t even know what system we played, we just outplayed, and outcompeted our opposition. Again, it all goes back to the grass roots level, the Arsenal Soccer Club.

    Thank You,

Kevin Beale East Aurora Boys Varsity Soccer.

  • 05/26/2008 8:45 PM: Youth interest in Arsenal Travel Soccer

Sad that the Aurora Arsenal House League Soccer season is over?

Are you interested in finding out more about Travel Soccer?

It may be hard to believe but preparations are well underway for the 2009 Travel season. Registration and background information about our Travel Program and the Tryout Schedule for the formation of the 2009 season teams will be sent out in August. Registration will be held in early September with tryouts in late September and early October. So the time might be right for you to ask if you and your child are ready for Travel Soccer. To start, if you have not already done so we encourage you to attend one of our U10, U11 or U12 games to gain a flavor for the level of competition travel soccer brings. On the back is a schedule of the remaining Aurora Arsenal home games for those age levels. Teams are gender specific and there are multiple divisions in each age bracket so we can place teams at the appropriate level of competition. You can also visit our website. We have not posted 2009 information yet but the Travel letter will help you understand the level of commitment and the Frequently Asked Questions section might be helpful as well. Below are a couple of sample questions from the Travel FAQ section. Q: How far will our team travel?

A: The Aurora Arsenal is a member of the Buffalo and Western New York Junior Soccer League (B&WNYJSL). As the name implies the league is geographically based in Buffalo and the Western New York area. There are teams as far north as Wilson and Youngstown and to the south in Holland and Arcade. If your team plays only league games (no tournaments) you will only play in Western New York.

Q: How often do Travel Teams practice?

A: During the Travel season teams generally practice two or three times per week, especially at the younger age levels. The exact schedule is determined by the teams coaching staff. There also will be indoor practices over the winter at Sahlen's and possibly the middle school and other indoor venues in the area. Player development is a key component to Travel soccer and the Arsenal tries to give the players as many opportunities as possible to develop their skills. However this does require commitment from the player and the family and needs to be seriously considered prior to trying out for a travel team. Our goal is to have Travel teams of both genders at every age level from U10 thru U19 and participate in the Buffalo & Western New York Junior Soccer League. At U10, U11 and U12 we hope to have multiple teams. Our ability to do this depends on several key factors:

    1) The availability of a willing and competent coach

    2) Sufficient registration numbers in an age division to form a team or multiple teams

    3) A minimum player skill threshold to compete in the Buffalo and Western New York Junior Soccer League

Travel soccer is about player development specifically at the U10, U11 and U12 levels. Recently the Buffalo and Western New York Junior Soccer League, of which the Arsenal is a member, made changes so that U10’s play 7v7 and U11 and U12 9v9 on smaller size fields. Many studies have shown that this means that each player gets many more touches on the ball than on a full size field thus getting more opportunities to get involved in play and learn the game. The Arsenal Board is fully in favor of this change. If you have questions not addressed here, please contact our President and Travel Coordinator, Raymond Wrazen, at 652-4573 or wrazenra@fisher-price.com

  • 02/13/2008 10:00 PM: Pro Forma to offer Aurora Arsenal apparel and merchandise

The Aurora Arsenal board met with with East Aurora resident Jim Egan of Pro Forma who is providing apparel and other merchandise to Arsenal players, parents, and coaches. Jim is looking at offering some new items for 2008. All items feature the new and improved logo and are designed to show off your Arsenal pride.

You can order directly from the proforma website

Also, if you prefer, Jim is very happy to work with you directly by phone, e-mail or in person.

One note: Jim offers a 10% discount for a team order of 10 or more. If you have any questions, I am sure that Jim will be able to answer them for you.

Bear in mind a portion of every purchase that is made will go directly to the Aurora Arsenal Building fund. As announced in September of 2006 the Aurora Arsenal has embarked upon a capital fund raising campaign to construct a building adjacent to the soccer fields at Knox Farm State Park. The building will have a concession stand, storage area and rest rooms. The Aurora Arsenal are in the process of raising $300,000 to complete the project. This is one small step to securing the funds necessary to make that building a reality.

    State Intermediate Course ($55): Saturday, March 15 (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM).
The Intermediate course is designed to address the needs for the House and entry-level Travel coach. The course establishes the foundation for functional training by introducing coaches to the current best practices on training planning and presentation. The Intermediate course satisfies the B&WNYJSL Travel coaches requirement for licensing. It is a course designed for the coach that is working with players that are playing small-sided soccer in the 6v6, 7v7, 8v8, and 9v9 formats. The course is predominantly practical field demonstrations on how to create training environments that replicate the roles of the players on the field during games. Formations are also discussed along with functional training.

GK Training Course ($35): Sunday, March 16 (11:00 AM - 5:00 PM). The GK Training course is a new offering from NYSW and is open to all levels of experience; specifically aimed at the individual coach, not the specialized GK trainer. The course will consist of equal parts classroom instruction and field exercises. The emphasis will be on basic GK training techniques and on effectively incorporating your GKs into your normal team practice exercises.

There is no testing for these courses, but candidates must be in attendance for the entire course length to pass. Playing is not required, but both of these courses will need field participation from the coaches to help demonstrate exercises. You should come dressed to play. Sneakers or soccer flats are required for the indoor surface - no turfs or cleats. Playing experience is not required...just desire. Minimum age for both courses is 16 years.

  • 10/15/2006: Aurora Arsenal President Chris Miller retires from Aurora Arsenal board

It is with regret that I announce that longtime coach, Board of Director (BOD) member and Aurora Arsenal President, Chris Miller has retired as President effective September 2006. Chris leaves behind a lasting legacy of service to the Aurora Arsenal, its players, coaches and the community in general.

In addition to coaching various teams at the House and Travel level, Chris has served in nearly every position on the Arsenal board including Registrar, House Coordinator, Travel Coordinator, Vice President and for the past 10 years as President. Ten years that has seen substantial change and growth to where the Arsenal now serves nearly 1000 Aurora area boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 19.

This change and growth have been guided by a man that is selfless, tireless and a true volunteer. During the time that Chris has been President the Arsenal have had their main home fields transition from private ownership by the Knox family to New York State Parks and now to Town of Aurora control. To most, the day to day operation of the facility has proceeded in a seamless and uneventful manner. However, in large measure this was due to Chris' exceptional ability to work with State and local governments to ensure the children playing Arsenal soccer have a safe and accessible place to play. To quote local East Aurora writer and philosopher Elbert Hubbard: "One great, strong, unselfish soul in every community could actually redeem the world". Having worked side by side with him for the past 8 years I can attest that he is that strong, unselfish soul. Every word, every action done with integrity and a desire to do what is best for the players. In recognition of his contributions, Chris received from the Buffalo and Western New York Junior Soccer League the prestigious Simpkin award in 2004. An award that was established in 1986 in memory of Tony Simpkin, former president of the league, coach and administrator and is given annually in recognition of an individual who has given outstanding service to league and its players. They could not have picked a better recipient. Chris’ dedication and passion for the Arsenal program and the youth of Aurora was demonstrated in many ways. At virtually every meeting, he was there. At virtually every clinic, he was there. Virtually every night and weekend during the season, he was there. Most often you saw him there with his camera in hand, capturing all the action. For virtually every problem, he was there. To provide guidance, offer support and lend a hand to all of us. On behalf of the Aurora Arsenal Board of Directors, we THANK YOU Chris, you will be missed.

8/11/2006 Arsenal Soccer Building at Knox Farm State Park:

East Aurora, NY - The Aurora Arsenal Soccer Club has announced the kickoff of a capital fund raising campaign to construct a building adjacent to the soccer fields at Knox Farm State Park. The building will have a concession stand, storage area and rest rooms. The Aurora Arsenal are raising $300,000 to complete the project.

Now that there is a formal agreement in place for the use of Knox field, we’ve been able to offer the kids in our community an excellent facility for soccer," said Chris Miller , President of the Aurora Arsenal. "Aurora Town Supervisor Terry Yarnall , who was instrumental in securing that formal agreement, is also playing a key role in our current discussions with NYS Parks officials, who are also being very cooperative" noted Miller.

Ray Wrazen , Vice President and Travel Coordinator added "Construction of this building will really increase what the Arsenal can offer to the kids and parents who participate in the program."

Fund sources will include grant money as well as donations. Donations can be made to Aurora Arsenal Capital Fund, PO Box 132, East Aurora, NY 14052. More information about the project will be added to this website as the project progresses.
