The Buffalo and Western New York Junior Soccer League (BWNYJSL),
at its annual awards recognition meeting in October 2005, honored the
Aurora Arsenal Soccer Club with the 2005 Joe Schuh Award for
Sportsmanship. This award is presented annually to the club whose
players display the most sportsmanship and respect for their opponents,
their teammates and the game itself.
Joe Schuh was one of the founders of the League in 1967 and
was known for his dedication to kids and for doing things for
their benefit. At the meeting, Arsenal President Chris Miller
expressed his appreciation for the honor. "We've worked hard
to instill in all our players and coaches the elements of fair
play and sportsmanship and it's great to be recognized for the
success we've had" said Miller. He went on to say "We're truly
proud of the young boys and girls who've been a part of the Arsenal
program for many years and the dedicated Arsenal coaches who work
so closely with them all summer long".
This is the third year for this award and the Arsenal has been
in the running for it the prior two years. The Aurora Arsenal
Soccer Club was founded in 1975 and has close to 1,000 children
enrolled. Their games are played at the Knox Farm State Park soccer
fields along Knox Road and Park Associates fields on Gleed Avenuve
from late April through early August.
